Hidden in the heart of Alor Setar, Kedah, the Malay Heritage Village, or Perkampungan Warisan, offers visitors a glimpse into traditional Kedah Malay architecture and rural life.

One of its main attractions is Rumah Tok Su, a traditional timber house that was carefully relocated and preserved as part of Kedah's heritage. Together with Rumah Seri Banai, it provides an opportunity to see how traditional Malay homes were designed and used before modern concrete houses became common.

🌿 What Is the Malay Heritage Village?

The heritage site at Jalan Lumba Kuda, Alor Setar, consists of two traditional Kedah Malay houses:

The Kedah State Museum Board manages the site as a place for preserving traditional Malay architecture and heritage. Admission is currently listed as free.

The houses are set in a garden environment, providing a peaceful contrast to the modern buildings surrounding central Alor Setar.

🏡 The Story of Rumah Tok Su

Rumah Tok Su originally stood in Kampung Permatang Kerat Telunjuk, Bandar Baharu, Kedah, roughly 200 kilometres from Alor Setar according to Bernama's account.

The house was moved from its original location and reconstructed at the heritage village, with the intention of preserving its traditional architecture.

The name Tok Su comes from the nickname of the original owner's youngest child.

🪵 Traditional Kedah Architecture

Rumah Tok Su is a wonderful example of traditional Malay timber architecture.

The house features wooden construction, decorative carvings and several interconnected spaces designed for different activities.

Historical documentation describes the house as having six principal sections, including:

Beranda – veranda
Rumah Ibu – main living area
Beranjung – front section
Ruang Tengah – central space
Selang – connecting area
Dapur – kitchen
Pelantar – platform area

The house is supported by 34 pillars, according to Tourism Malaysia's Kedah guide.

🌺 Beautiful Wood Carvings

One of the most attractive features is the traditional woodwork.

Decorative carvings, ventilation panels and carefully crafted wooden details demonstrate the skill of traditional Malay craftsmen.

The architecture isn't only decorative. Traditional houses were designed with ventilation, shade and the tropical climate in mind.

Raised construction also helped provide ventilation underneath the house and offered some protection from water during heavy rainfall.

📜 A House With a Historical Story

Rumah Tok Su is particularly interesting because it is not simply an old house.

According to Bernama and heritage research, the house was used as a location for meetings and gatherings of the Barisan Pemuda movement before Malaysian independence.

This gives the building an additional layer of historical significance beyond its architecture.

🏡 Rumah Seri Banai

The second traditional house at the heritage village is Rumah Seri Banai.

It was relocated from Kampung Banai in Kubang Pasu and takes its name from its original location. Before being preserved, the house had also served as a people's school.

Together, Rumah Tok Su and Rumah Seri Banai demonstrate different examples of traditional Kedah Malay domestic architecture.

🌳 Preserving Kedah's Traditional Houses

The idea behind the heritage village was to preserve traditional architecture that was increasingly disappearing as wooden houses were replaced by modern buildings.

The Kedah State Museum Board explains that the site was created from an initiative associated with former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, with the aim of preserving valuable Malay architectural heritage.

The houses have also been used for research by architecture students, as well as photography, filming and documentaries.

Rumah Tok Su and Rumah Seri Banai are popular subjects for photography because of their traditional wooden architecture and garden setting.

The site has also been used for wedding photography and family portraits.

The combination of carved wood, traditional rooflines, greenery and open spaces creates a very different atmosphere from modern Alor Setar.
